How can I melt old gold jewelry down at home?

I’ve got a bunch of old gold jewelry pieces that I want to melt down and pour into mold.

Erm I wouldn’t really recomend you doing it at home. Different qualities of gold take different heats… and most likely since its old jewelry pieces it will have impurities. Most all golds do. (plus you need your own purifying "beads") To remove impurities you need a carbon stick. I would go to a jewelry repair shop and ask them to melt it down, get the impurities out for you. Then you come to the problem with the mold… no matter how perfect and how simple it may seem you need tons of tools to shave it down and shine it up. Coming out of a mold it looks extremely dull almost brown and dirty. If you go to a good enough shop, they may give you further instructions on how to finish melting it down at home. OR be safe and bring your mold to them and let them do it. You can’t do a good job justice at home.

Price for gold bullion is about $1000. 14K jewelry is slightly more than 50% pure gold, so, 4 ounces of 14K should be worth about $2000 for meltdown value. Expect to pay a commission (which varies) for the transaction. Don’t be afraid to ask a gold buyer what your gold is worth, get a second opinion, too and sell to the highest bidder!

No offense but you are getting those marks because you have cheap gold jewelry. Ask any jeweler, he will tell you the same thing. Stay above 12k gold and you will not have the problem.
